Education

We believe that education is the best means of recovery and reintegration for survivors of slavery, and endeavor to ensure that education is provided for all the children in our program, as well as the children of our adult survivors, and to the adults as well, as they are able.  Currently, we are sending over a hundred girls and boys to school through our school sponsorship programs in India and Nepal, and our Freedom school in Northern India.  We sent 15 girls are in boarding school, because they were born into brothel districts, and it was extremely dangerous for them to continue living there, in one room with their mothers.  Our donations also help to pay for the education of hundreds more children and teens in our 10 core partner agencies.  The money that mothers earn from their handicrafts production pays for the school fees of their children in Golo, Uganda.

Almost all of these children had never attended school in their lives before now.  At first they had some behavioral problems, including sexual acting-out, because they have grown up watching their mothers exploited on a nightly basis.  Many had nutritional deficiencies as well, or were traumatized because they had been exploited by their mothers' clients.  After a few months in a caring and structured school environment, the children begin to thrive.  Several of our kids were selected for scholarships to elite schools, despite the fact that they started school at age 8 or 9!

The Freedom School

TEN's Freedom School is for children who until recently, were enslaved alongside their parents in quarries and agriculture bonded labor slavery in Firojpur, a remote village in Northern India.  In the illegal and immoral system of bonded labor slavery, families are enslaved for decades, to pay off 'debts' - often less than $100.  Threats of violence, and actual violence, keep them in bondage, as well as their belief that they are legally required to fulfil their debts through forced labor.  Children raised in slavery have no life skills or education.  Thus they have few options other than continued exploitation.  Read more about the Freedom School.

School Sponsorship:

Sponsorship is a simple way to transform the life of one survivor or child born into a brothel community, ending the cycle of slavery and exploitation for that individual and for their children in the future. TEN'spartner organizations in India and Nepal select children living in shelters or in red light districts to attend school, many for the first time.

We do not take any administrative fees out of our sponsorship donations -not one dime.  100% of sponsorship dollars go directly to pay for kids' school fees, transportation, supplies, or shelter/boarding school room and board. Click here to view our sponsorship brochure.   Email info@madebysurvivors.com if you have any questions, or if you'd like to start sponsoring a child today!
