Banged up in Bangladesh
Yesterday, I took a twelve hour bus ride from Kolkata, India to Dhaka, Bangladesh. I went to visit several NGOs so that we can start working with some of the organizations there. Unfortunately, I was there for only two days when I had an accident and broke my ankle in 3 places. My friend took me to the best hospital in the country, and the orthopedic surgeon informed me that I needed immediate surgery to insert metal plates and screws. A bit nerve-racking, I'll admit. But the hospital, Apollo Dhaka, is excellent and the staff did everything they could to keep me comfortable. My friend and his family visited me every day, and after I was discharged took excellent care of me at their house.
The NGO staff members I was scheduled to meet with were extremely understanding and came to meet me at my friend's house. One of these NGOs runs a soap-making project and currently employs 25 survivors in soap-making. Another project advocates for female employees of the garment industry, who are often exploited in the factories. It was so wonderful to be able to meet with some of the NGO staff members, but I'm still planning to go back to Bangladesh as soon as I can walk again.
After my stitches were removed, the surgeon cleared me for travel and I flew back to the United States. I'll most likely be here for the next 2-3 months for recovery and rehabilitation. This is a huge disappointment for me, since there is so much work to be done at the Destiny center, but there is a silver lining. Paul Suit, one of the volunteers from our January volunteer trip, offered to work at the Destiny center this summer while I was gone. He's coming next week and we're already briefing him on the ongoing projects.
Although there are a million things that I need to be doing in India, I'm going to spend the next few months focusing on fundraising and our awareness party program. While these activities aren't a replacement for the smiling faces of the Destiny women, they are just as important and necessary to our mission. So don't worry, I may have a broken leg but I can still use my computer and phone!
