Apne Aap helps 1500 trafficking survivors and high risk youth (children and teens born into brothel communities) to find alternatives to forced prostitution through participation in Apne Aap schools, non-formal education/literacy, job training, support groups and self-sufficiency programs.
Filmmaker Ruchira Gupta founded this program after making a documentary about prostitution in Bombay. While researching the film, Gupta learned that many of the women had been sold as slaves into prostitution, typically between age 11 and 14 (today the girls are as young as 8). When she asked how she could help these women, they replied ‘if you want to help us, help our children. We don’t want them to have to endure what we have endured.no comment
